LANGUAGE and COMMUNICATING WITH LOCAL PEOPLE
Official language is Khalkha-Mongolian, which is a part of Uralo-Altaic language family. The Mongolian language is spoken not only in Mongolia proper. Its dialects are also spoken in Inner Mongolia (China), in the republics of Buryatia and Kalmykia (both in Russia). Some ethnic tribe in western part of Mongolia can speak Kazakh. Public can speak English and Russian, little German and Japanese. These days Mongolia uses both traditional Uighur (vertical) and Cyrillic scripts. The literacy is very high in excess of 90% of the population.
